Classic Newsreels about Orpington and the Surrounding Area As well as making a wide variety of films including dramas, documentaries and comedies, for over 30 years Orpington Video & Film Makers (OVFM) has been filming in and around Orpington to produce a newsreel of the previous year’s events to include in their Spring Show. To try to relieve any boredom you may be feeling during the lockdown they have made their two oldest newsreels available to interest and entertain you. Look back at events such as The Great Storm of 1987 as captured by OVFM members or the end of the red telephone box in 1988; see how the shops in the area have changed and watch out in case you recognise people, perhaps yourself, in any of the scenes. These newsreels proved so popular that more material was made available. As well as two further Newsreels - 1995 and Queen Elizabeth II Silver and Golden Jubilees - more films made by members have been added. Some of the comedy ones are very funny - do have a look at 'Gotcha'! To view the material please go to www.ovfm.org.uk/ovfm-classic-newsreels/ Films from OVFM's History of Orpington Project
OVFM’s extensive film archive already contains a number of films relating to local history that have been made by members over the years. For the past three years OVFM has had a project to make more such films and two of these have also been made available for you to view during lockdown. One is about Ivy Millichamp, the last civilian to be killed by enemy action in World War Two. The other is based on some paintings of Orpington made by local artist Richard Rayner in the 1890s.
